HLTAID011 or HLTAID012: which one do you need?

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the general workplace certificate. HLTAID012 is the education and care version, with more emphasis on infants and children, and it includes HLTAID011 within it. If you work in a school, preschool, long day care or family day care setting, it is usually HLTAID012.

What is actually different

HLTAID012 covers the same ground as HLTAID011 and adds content specific to education and care settings — managing asthma and anaphylaxis in children, infant and child CPR technique, and the kinds of incidents that happen in a care environment. It runs 3.5 hours with us against 3 hours for HLTAID011.

Because HLTAID012 includes HLTAID011 and HLTAID009, holding it means you are covered for general workplace first aid as well. The reverse is not true: HLTAID011 does not satisfy a requirement for HLTAID012.

Who asks for which

Education and care employers generally specify HLTAID012. General workplaces, offices, retail, hospitality, trades and most community roles generally specify HLTAID011. Parents and carers with no workplace requirement most often book HLTAID011, or HLTAID009 if they only want CPR.

Requirements are set by your employer or your sector's regulator, not by us, so confirm the unit code with them before booking. Asking for the code rather than the course name removes the ambiguity entirely.

The cost of getting it wrong

Booking HLTAID011 when HLTAID012 was required means doing a second course, because the units are not interchangeable in that direction. It is the single most common re-book we see, and one question beforehand prevents it.
